[Paddlewise] Cold Weather 1st Layer

"Hey". There seems to be a lot of choices when it comes to 1st layers
of winter clothing. Can I get some opinions on which materials/brands
etc you've had success with, or lack of success?

My interest is in something that wicks well, adds noticeable warmth, and
is tight to the skin with great stretchability. I've got to have that
third element due to some of the stuff that it will be worn under. This
garment will be used under multiple layers of clothing, in multiple
degrees of "cold" but not to exceed about 30 degrees Fahrenheit (I'm in
Virginia), and in multiple degrees of activity from running to sitting
still and everything in between, but mostly reasonably idle activities,
like sitting around camp or taking non strenuous nature walks.

I found lots of "wicking and warm", but adding "tight fitting and
stretchy" to the mix is posing a little bit of a problem, short of
spending my kids college tuition money on fancy underwear :-)

Any comments?

Rick
