Smart guy. His story reminds me of an acquaintance who has a cabin in the
woods on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Thor, who
is in his lower eighties, went out one day without a compass to pick
blueberries and became lost (I think it was foggy or overcast). When he
realized he was lost, he made a nest under a tree, covered himself with
leaves for warmth, and spent a night or two there. When the sun
reappeared, he regained his bearings and found a nearby trail, where he
soon ran into friends who were searching for him, much to everyone's
relief. Once on the trail, though, I'm sure he would have found his way
home, regardless.

Moral: Don't panic and know your survival techniques.

Paddlewisers,

Because of this storm blowing offshore, I
canceled a club paddle in San Diego the same day.

This same off shore wind, caused us to change our plans and stay inside the
harbor in Oxnard, CA about 250 miles north of San Diego. At 8;30 in the
morning, we were already seeing gusts of 25 knots. We didn't want to see how
much worse it could get as the day went on.
