If you think waiting till the last 6 months to plan a paddling trip is cutting
it too close ...you might be a seakayaker.
Either Chief Seattle or Jeff Foxworthy

Seriously, for those of us who dream/plan well ahead ...where is everyone
planning to paddle in 2005?
I have got three big trips planned. The first, probably in May, I plan to
solo paddle North out of Petersburg, Alaska and head toward a group of Island
known as The Brothers. Sitting in the middle of Fredrick Sound the Brothers
are two big islands with a couple small ones. They are supossedly a gathering
place for Orca in the spring and Humpback whales in the summer. This trip will
involve a couple open crossings (5 miles) so weather will play a big factor.
Eventually (I hope) I will paddle into Kake and and take the ferry back home.
This will probably take 10 days and cover about 120 miles.
Second. My son and I plan to return to repeat our trip two years ago to the
LeConte Glacier south of Petersburg. This year we hope the ice will let us get
closer to the glacier. Last time we were stopped short about a mile and a half
away.
The third trip is a whale watching trip from Petersburg to Kake (about 65
miles). The north shore of Kupreanof is a favorite feeding ground for
humpbacks especially in late summer. Last year biologists estimated about 100
whales where feeding in this area. We plan to rent a forest service cabin half
way through the trip and have my wife fly up to join us for a couple days of
whale watching.
Of course lots of day trips will be added as the weather allows.
Happy paddling in 2005

Bob
