I like having a task light of some sort on my person just in case my boat and I decide to take different routes! - and to have for dusk/dawn tasks in the cockpit. Any small light would work but I like having a headlamp around camp and I'd prefer not to pack two lights where one would do the job. The burn time for batteries in LED lights make them great for trips.

I found this small dive light - not exactly a headlamp but appears that it could work with a headband or hat around camp:

Once again, no association with company - just a diving supply site I've purchased from in the past so it is familiar.

This dive-light looks similar to Princeton Tec lights, like 4AA Impact that
I have. Impact is supposed to be waterproof, same as many other by
Princeton Tec; may be yours that failed was some unlucky one. I don't like
using it, and carry it only as a back-up to LED headlight (again Princeton
Tec, - Aurora). Headlamp is much more convenient than flashlight (or torch
in GB and AU), for any tasks either in a cockpit or around a camp. Auroras
are not waterproof, but reasonably dunk-proof Petzl Tikka is almost
identical). 1 watt LED in this dive-light (link above) is a lot of power
for LED, I don't know how long batteries will last (with Impact or Aurora I
don't have to worry about it nearly entire season). Princeton has released
some new headlamps after Aurora, check their website. One is smaller and
self-contained like Aurora (should fit in a pocket), and another one has a
separate battery pack.
