Just to tweak a few memories... Caveman (John Gray) participated
in a few of the kayaking threads but I think mostly on WaveLength.
The last thread he participated in was the discussion on making
lifevests mandatory for *all* kayaking trips. For a guy that
spends probably most of his waking life on or in the water, he
couldn't see the logic in an expert waterman wearing a lifevest
in familiar waters and listed surfers, snorkelers, free divers,
etc. as examples. Diehards clung to the 100% rule and
Caveman decided to... well, logoff and go sea kayaking :-).

I paddled with Caveman John Gray about 8 years ago in NYC harbor. We went
one of those regular trip on weekends to the Statue of Liberty. Gray was in
town to receive an award from the Smithsonian or some such group. He and I
teamed up in one of his double inflatables, one of his own design that was
manufactured for him.

He is a strong paddler having raced in Hawaii but we got caught in a strong
counter current in front of Ellis Island, which was on the trip itinerary.
It took all our might to get clear. A group of other kayakers were blown
back and went around via the backside of Ellis to make any head way heading
home to Manhattan.

I also met David Williams a few times.

My understanding is that Caveman was disenchanted with happenings in
Thailand and left but that is based on what was said quite a few years ago.
I lost touch with him awhile ago.

Hi Ralph,

I get the impression he may be living in Hawaii but still conducts
tours in Thailand, Vietnam, Fiji, Philippines and Hawaii. If you
check his website at http://www.johngray-seacanoe.com/guest_comments.php
he has comments from customers regarding the tours through the end
of October this year and many take place in Thailand. Maybe we will
learn something positive soon. I hope so.

Well, this excerpt from his website may explain where he is:

http://www.johngray-seacanoe.com/profile/index.htm

After 12 years designing and developing one of the
World's most highly awarded Ecotourism companies,
John "Caveman" Gray goes his own way by forming
"John Gray's SeaCanoe" with 18 of his most loyal
and experienced guides. "After 12 years in Phuket,
the experiment ran its course and I was packing for
Polynesia," says Gray, "but when all these guides
showed up, I had no choice but to stay and do another
start-up."

"I owe it to the guys for their loyalty, honesty and
pride, and to Thailand, which has yet to see our best."
Unlike his old experimental company where Gray gave
away the shares to local people, Caveman is managing
director of the new company. "In the economic
laboratory, I played consultant/observer. Now I'm
director of the movie - it's a different story."
