mitch,

i have experienced vertigo on extremely flat water with a mirage effect. i
kept wishing some waves would come up, but NOOOoooo, and i had to turn
about and paddle in (this was tomales bay, CA).

benign positional vertigo has many etiologies, some viral, some idiopathic
(fancy medical word for 1. "hell if i know" or 2. "i'm an idiot about your
disease.").

this site might give you some ideas you could bring to yr MD.

Mitch,

I had some vertigo on the water in a luminous fog (thin layer with strong
sunlight behind me and aloft) which cleared when the fog did. Others who get
it on the water, in my experience, find it is cumulative if you get out there
day after day, but I bet that depends a lot on the individual.

Hope it clears up.

Mitch,

I also have had a couple of bouts with vertigo, both on and off the water. The ENT had no idea what caused the spells. Once I was on the water, paddling hard pass a barge and it hit me hard. No balance, world was swirling. Made it to shore...lucky I was in a double. It passed slowly within a few hours.

Another time I was in the grocery store check-out line. I was down for more than 10 days. I wasn't safe to drive. They still had no idea what was the cause.

I feel comfortable on the water, rolling, surfing, but I stay away from twirling rides at the Fair.

Good luck and I'd like to know what excercises you do in therapy.
