Check out Willard Bascom's Waves and Beaches;  100 foot (ca. 30 meter) waves 
are documented and not uncommon.  I strongly suspect there have been 50 meter 
waves on the ocean, and no divine intervention was required.  Think tsunami 
or mongo landslide into a shallow bay (Lituya?).
