I'm working (if you can call planning a kayak trip "work") on a possible 10 day kayak trip next July to the Kyuquot area. Instead of launching at Fair Harbor, someone suggested launching at Little Espinosa inlet, then paddling down Esperanza inlet, stopping at Catala island, then continuing north up the coast to Rugged point. The stretch from Catala to Rugged point is an area I've never paddled. Assuming a morning launch (like 8 to 9 am) and moderate conditions, can anyone tell me how difficult this area is? I would be traveling with a group of experienced kayakers (although I wouldn't call any of us kayaking "athletes"), although not everyone has done a lot of surf launches/landings. Are there many places one could land, if not surf-free, at least on a sandy beach? I am familiar with the area from Kyuquot village north to the base of the Brooks peninsula, so one way to respond is to compare the two areas. As a separate query (just out of curiosity), the updated version of "Kayak Routes of Pacific Northwest Coast" shows the spelling of the non-anglicized version of Checleset as " Che: k' tles7et'h' ". This is not a typo, there's really a colon and a "7" in the name. Does anyone know how this should be pronounced (I assume it's at least a little different than Checleset)? Or even how one is supposed to pronounce a 7 used as a letter?????
