Haven't heard of a surf drogue before...imho there's enough going on in the surf zone without worrying about getting a drogue tether around my neck as well.. my view would be that if a paddler is not going to use rolling, surfing, broaching, bracing techniques then his/her surf zone options are severely self-limited. And I have difficulty imagining an occasion when a drogue could be usefully deployed to help a sick/injured kayaker through the surf. I don't know about you, but my intention in a surf zone is to get the hell out of it as soon as possible, and often enough, it is the last 20 or so metres to shore when you need to have speed as well as full control over your boat; presumably just when the drogue is caught in a sideways rip out and doing its best to counter your own efforts. That said, I belong to the fraternity that considers the use of one's own body as a drogue in some circumstances as a legitimate survival technique, ie, using a short wide leash attached to the stern and swimming your boat in with fins. But this too requires practice, even if just to prove how difficult being a human drogue can be... my 0.02c worth..
