I certainly understand and respect your perspective especially since
over the years virtually all of my own special spots locally have been
"discovered" by media, government, outfitters and tour operators. I
was stunned just a few weeks ago when I arrived at one such spot on a
local barrier island and found a sign posted by the DNR designating it
as an official campsite on an official trail that I had never heard of
till that moment. However, I seriously doubt whether sharing these
locations openly with the paddling community would have made a
difference of more than a few months or years one way or the other.

But, to extend my original example, I am not sure I want to drive 7
hours, then paddle 15 miles into the wilderness and face the
possibility of having to bushwhack my way through 20 yards of
Rhododendron and blackberry thicket, (destructively I might add), and
hump my gear up steep banks to camp illegally because I couldn't find
the legal designated site. What you refer to as illusion truly is only
that.

Cheers,

Michael
