On the subject of death due to lack training, etc. The death of Lone Madsen was at least partly the result of failure to take the advice of Inuit experts in Greenland, where she interviewed numerous highly skilled Inuit paddlers, but failed to take their advice on skills to master, manner of dress essential for the Greenland environment, seasons appropriate for the planned expedition. High tech "STUFF" does not make up for lack of basic equipment, dress, and skills. One of the saddest reports I've read with her calls for help and her partner unable to respond etched in my mind. That report made a major contribution to my understanding of the need for training. I believe her reports were widely read and enjoyed before that tragedy but have never read one myself - again references would be appreciated. Peter, The story "Lone Madsen's last journey" was published in /Sea Kayaker/ in the June, 1999 issue. Sad story, indeed.
