I'd bet the problem is that sand and grit are getting in there.  
Being sealed is probably more important than having a bearing.  Once 
fine grit gets into the plastic, it will act like sandpaper.  Your 
long portages don't help under the circumstances.

I have a cart but if I had to replace it, I'd make my own.  There's 
nothing too complicated about it and I bet you can find instructions 
on the web (there are some in a back issue(s) of Sea Kayaker).
