I am looking for a good storage system for the boats. Currently they are on
saw horses in the basement.

I've been told they are taking up to much space. The ceiling is to low to
hang them from. Are there any good commercial systems or designs available?

I've used about 5 systems for storing boats.

1. Hang from the rafter using nylon webbing.

2. "rope ladder" hung from rafter where each "step" in the ladder holds
a boat. A nice addition to the rope ladder system is a board at the
bottom of the ladder keeping the ropes spread apart.

3. Canoe Tree - T shapped structure with boats on each side.

4. block and tackle system to hoist a heavy canoe/kayak to ceiling - be
sure to use straps under the boat, once lifted into place, having part
of the lifting system give way is unpleasant.

5. Built my own, similar to the talic - http://www.talic.com/ using 2 by
4's.
I built it about 12 years ago and it's still holding up well. It's
freestanding, and
all of the boats are on one side, stacked floor to ceiling. It
currently holds 6 boats -
one canoe, 2 sea kayaks, a surf ski, and a skin/frame kayak. My rack
isn't nearly as
pretty as the talic. The support "arms" are just 2 by 4's with lap
joints to attach them to
the uprights. The base is more complex, I can explain it if anyone gets
ambitious and needs
suggestions. I'm sure anyone mechanically inclined can come up with
similar or improved designs.

I have my canoes on the wall using simple shelf beackets. The steel
brackets are 20 inches, so I put 1x4 on them to the lengths needed
(varies). Then I mounted the brackets, 2 per boat, on 2x4 uprights that
rest on the floor and are secured to the wall.

The whole thing (4 canoes, 1 sea kayak) takes up the width of the widest
canoe. (The 2x4s don't actually move the canoes out fro the wall
because of course they are widest at the middle whereas the 2x4s are
toward the ends. The space behind the ends of the boats is used to
stand paddles, tools, stepladder, etc. etc.
