The north end is good, but the number of cottages and private land increases to the south. There are lots of spots to camp - any Crown land is a potential camping area. Just avoid the First Nations reserves and obvious private land. The topo maps and the small craft charts are both good references. If you go as far south as The Massassauga Prov Park and Georgian Bay National Park, you'll need to have made reservations in advance or paddle in to book a site on the day you arrive (the latter is not a good plan in peak summer).
