My understanding is that the NWS folks hold a daily briefing....which is 
attended by the meteorologists from the media outlets.  The NWS folks tell 
them what is going on and they go back and create the graphics.  OK, 
certainly some may tweak the info from the NWS based on their own work but 
I think the gist is that the NWS dispense the basic info.

I too would hate to see the NWS out of this loop!  I personally like the 
"Hourly Weather Graph" feature found on most NWS sites.  Very helpful when 
planning on-water activities or other outdoor events.
