Hi Rob,

Sounds like we're both arguing that the Pope is Catholic (and German:-) You've agreed with all my reasons for not liking the inflatables, and added some of your own (as well as some more arguements in their favour). When I said "arguably safer," I didn't say I was claiming it was safer (notice how I slyly side-slip:-)
Re the problems with flying with inflatables and their CO2 cartridges. I've never tried, but if I were given grief about safety concerns, I'd point out that the plane already has dozens, if not hundreds, of similar cartridges in the cabin, in the plane's own inflatable PFDs. Of course, in a post 9-11 world, mere logic is no assurance I'd get it aboard.

For exactly this reason, inflatable PDFs are not legal for whitewater use here in Canada. Don't know if they consider surf to be whitewater.

> The best benefit of an inflatable pfd instead of a foam one on the back deck is that I can be seen wearing a pfd and not have to explain to everyone why I wasn't wearing a pfd.

Since I own both anyway, if I were paddling in really warm weather, I might wear the inflatable for appearances sake, and have the foam unit at hand on the rear deck.

Bonus query for fellow Canucks. The mandatory paddling list at http://www.tc.gc.ca/BoatingSafety/sbg-gsn/canoe.htm
calls for "one Canadian-approved personal flotation device or lifejacket of appropriate size for each person on board"
Nothing said about being required to have it on (I wear mine all the time anyway.) Anyone ever been ticketed or threatened with a ticket for not wearing your PFD? Did you / would you fight it?

I heard of a case where someone got a ticket for wearing an unapproved
(but superior) model. Fought it and won because he was using a beat-up
old Canadian cheapo model as a kneeling pad, and the officer didn't
notice it but the paddler's companions could testify to it.

There were rumours of that happening on the Ottawa near Beachburg in the mid-80s, but I
never saw it despite paddling there a lot (wearing a high end rescue pfd that was not DOT
approved, but was significantly superior to anythingapproved in Canada at the time).

The problem was that the Canadian market was too small for Amarican manufacturers of
specialized pfds to bother with the testing and approval process in Canada. Fortunately
Canadian pfd manufacturers are now putting out better products, and more amd more American
manufactuers are jumping through the regulatory hoops to get their products certified for
Canada.

Meanwhile, I'm still happily wearing my non-approved pfd, but despite having been stopped
quite a few times, and despite occasionally paddling with (and fishing out) the local OPP
water safety officer and other police, the question of it being non-approved has never been
an issue. I figure that the police will be happy if I wear a pfd, and only a Barney Fife
would care whether or not it is officially approved.

The incident I heard about supposedly took place right in Ottawa, by a
patrol cop who was calling people over to the bank. I have been waiting
several years to actually meet the person involved.... But, when the
new regs came in wthere was a *lot* of talk about it and I heard other
cases of routine checks at boat launches and such in and near the city.
