To all:  Thanks for all the ideas.  I think I solved the problem by a trip to a local hardware store that has 2 inch wide, approx 1/16 inch thick, non-abrasive, self-adhering textured rubber tape.  It's a 3M product intended for stair treads, with great friction wet or dry.  Cost me about $3.
