I'm planning a kayaking trip in the Kyuquot area (west coast Vancouver island) and am considering launching from Amai Inlet, rather than Fair Harbor. Does anyone happen to know: 1. What is the road like? About the same as from Zeballos to Fair Harbor (ie bumpy gravel, at least as of around 9 years ago when I last visited) or better/worse?* 2. Can you camp near the launch site at Amai or is the nearest camping at Fair Harbor? Or, even if there isn't a designated "campground", is it ok to just find some place near the parking area to put up 5 tents? Thanks! Evan Dallas Woodinville, Washington ---------------- * As a side anecdote, we became locally famous on this trip, albeit for a rather short period, for managing to get _three_ flat tires by driving too fast on that road with "city tires" that don't hold up too well on sharp gravel. Fortunately, someone passing by had mercy on us and gave us a small tire pump, which allowed us to drive maybe a mile, then get out and pump up the tires, repeated mile after mile all the way back to Zeballos. By the time we reached Zeballos, we were already the "buzz of the town". We had to get the tire repair guy out of the local tavern, who turned out to be quite the philosopher, discussing world events and quoting various philosophers of the past, etc etc. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
