The most common assistance given was helping keep the weaker swimmers on course. A very few swimmers would eventually veer off in an odd direction. A kayaker would come along side and give them a bit of encouragement and tell them to keep the boat on their right/left depending on which way they were veering. The other thing we did was keep an eye out for high speed boats and waved them off with raised paddles. It was all great fun and we received free lunch and T-shirts.
