Has anyone had any experience with these 13" x 19" charts? One url for buying them is http://www.noaachartsonline.com/ which looks like a business site but with, apparently, a license from NOAA. The price is pretty decent and the size is great for kayaks. They are proportionately reduced from full-sized charts, according to the web page. These are very practical for kayak decks. Mark Arnold stopped in the area a couple of weeks ago and we paddled on my local lake one day then went up to the 1000 islands for an overnight trip. I had ordered a chart which combined 2 NOAA charts that covered the area well. It ended up costing me about $25. We stopped in a marina before we launched and found a fishermans map ($11) that covered the area just as well and was smaller so I never even used the NOAA maps. It looks I could have got the same coverage from these smaller NOAA maps for $10 and they would have fit on my deck without folding. From the NOAA site there appear to be lots of businesses that are licensed to sell NOAA charts and a separate list that offer the Print On Demand charts. For $5 each I'll probably order several charts just so that I have them in my collection. BTW, I just spent one day with Mark Arnold paddling in the 1000 islands then headed back home (about 2.5 hours away). We had a real nice day paddle making our way around several of the islands. We had a great launch spot in a protected bay (Eel bay) and swapped boat after getting back to the launch. I got to give is Impex Force 3 a try and liked it a lot. It would definitely be on my short list if I were looking to buy a versatile day/weekend boat in the 16-17.5' range. I didn't get to try it in rough conditions but we ran into quite a bit of wind and white caps during our day paddle and Mark indicated that it handles those conditions well. Thought it was funny to read this post because I just ordered one of these on Wednesday and it came in the mail today! Pretty fast delivery. Mine is of the Big Island of Hawaii. My opinion is you better have a big magnifying glass to read it on your kayak! I can't read hardly any pertinent data with the naked eye and not much more with a glass. Looks pretty though! Publications of the U.S. government are not copyrighted so anyone who wants can republish the information however they see fit. No license is needed. This is not true of the Canadian government so you are unlikely to see cheap reprints of their charts. One company that produces "cheap reprints" of Canadian charts is Richardsons. Richardsons sells their charts in books that cover a complete area -- like one of the great lakes. They state right on their web page that they are selling "reproductions of Canadian charts." http://www.richardsonscharts.com/ One place you can buy them by mail order is here: http://www.nauticalmind.com/ --------------------------------------------------------------- Please limit all email attachments sent to this address to a maximum of 0.5MB. There are US charts of the entire Great Lakes, including Canadian territorial waters, so they can reproduce those without problem. The ones I've seen have not been as complete as the Canadian charts covering Canadian waters.
