I have had a carabiner on a commercial tow belt catch (hook securely) on my padded seat back connections, while practicing a paddle float reentry. It took a minute or two to get it free, and I was very glad this was only a practice in calm conditions. Of course, after thinking about it for a day, I realized I could have pulled the quick release on the belt and I would not have been trapped any longer. In real conditions this slow thought process would have been too late. I'll check for the stainless steel clip Jim et al. mentions next time I'm at West Marine. I have definitely been looking for an alternative to the carabiners.
