I mentioned that we routinely made our own climbing gear years ago but I should have also mentioned that we had several books available plus some Seattle Mountaineer pamphlets that showed us the ideas others have had. Now, of course, there is a plethora of climbing gear (much of it unrecognizable to me) that the average person could never hope to replicate. For all I know there is a publication somewhere that gives us something similar for kayaking.
