The manufacturer of the Tyvek covers mentioned in the
previous message also makes "Rain ponchos" using the
same Tyvek. The suggestion is that it has properties
vaguely similar to GoreTex. My concern with a
waterproof cover is that the boat has no opportunity
to "dry out" after use. You can sponge out the
majority of the water, but it still may end up damp
enough to grow a green fuzzy farm. Reasonable
expectations?

I would think that the concern with using any cover
while the kayak is on a vehicle is chafing. The nylon
covers mentioned in another message look to have
several straps to secure the fabric into place. That
would probably help to reduce fabric movement.

I think vaguely is about right. There are garments (usually one or a few uses
and throw away items) made with Tyvek - paint coveralls, that sort of thing.
I've never seen a jacket or other item that would last a long time. I made a
ski waxing apron out of Tyvek and duct tape once and it kept the wax off me but
looked like crap in a short while. If hot wax hit the Tyvek, it would soak
right through before hardening.

When you make a long term storage cover of a waterproof material, it should be
more roof and walls than a condom. You have to ensure lots of air flow.

I think long term storage and transportation covers are two different things.
Features that you want in one are not desirable in the other.
