I have (finally!) got the new improved bilingual (French/English)
KayakWiki up and running. There are still a few kinks to work out, but
it's running reasonably well. It runs on a new server with the latest
versions of all Wiki and related software.

To access KayakWiki, the URLs are:

French: <http://fr.kayakwiki.org/Accueil>
English: <http://en.kayakwiki.org/Main_Page>

The pages currently on the French wiki have been translated by Olivier
Parsy of Belgium last year. My French skills are not anywhere near what
is required to do translations, so anyone who wishes to contribute is
welcome. At this point, the pages most in need of copying and
translating from the English wiki are the administrative pages (how to
edit a page, etc - on the English wiki under the KayakWiki Housekeeping
category).

There is also a pool wiki: <http://pool.kayakwiki.org/Main_Page>, which
is used to store files common to both French and English wikis (e.g. -
photos). I am endeavouring to make the pool a bilingual site - tricky
since it's not supported directly in the wiki software. However, the
pool wiki should never have more than a few pages (upload, view files,
instructions etc).

With the dirty work now done, I can add other language KayakWikis with
relative ease. If there is _serious_ interest (i.e. folks that will
actually do the contributions/editing/etc), I can add
German/Dutch/Swedish/... in the future.

Great idea! This is a good start for the French speaking community. I'll
help whenever I can.

Glad to hear it. There may be a few hiccups in the first week or two.
With people (and Google/Yahoo/other search engines) banging on it, I'm
finding problems I never would have found in testing. I fix them on the
fly, so the wiki suddenly disappears for a few moments occasionally. If
you have a problem, give it a couple of minutes and try again. If a
problem persists, let me know on the Problem Reporting page (link on the
main page/Accueil or e-mail (address on User:Michael Daly page).

Let others on the French paddling forums know, too, if you frequent
them. In addition to general kayaking information, we need input on
paddling destinations in Quebec, for example.

I'd really like to see the French KayakWiki do well.

Mike
PS - the French text on the pool wiki has been translated mostly by
Altavista's Babel (with modifications by me). Let me know if the French
is really atrocious or good. When I try to write in French, I have no
idea whether it's international French, Quebecois or Acadien - or
franglais for that matter!
