One reason there are regulations about maintaining a "respectful"
distance from marine mammals.... *human* safety (these are both recent
events).

In this incident, the Japanese fishermen were attempting to guide what
they believed to be was a stranded whale back out to sea.
Unfortunately, the whale did not understand and one of the poor rescuers
lost his life. It appears that after attacking the boat, the whale then
when for the fisherman.

Another incident involving careless divers who swam too close to a
sleeping mother and her calf.....

Although many of is have had Calif Grey Whales approach us to be petted in Baja California, the original name for them was Devil Fish. They were called that for a reason.

Considering the history we share with whales and our boats of many
sizes, it's amazing they tolerate us at all.

A good lesson is "let sleeping whales float"... especially when calves
are attached.

I know it's possible to find research that "proves" almost anything but I'm
going with cetacean studies over the years that say whales have language and
society,
and it's possible, to my way of thinking, that some of them have just had
enough of us,
after all the tragedy we've visited on their family groups.

I've seen orcas while paddling and am very glad I was far enough away to not
get in their way.
They seem remarkably tolerant, but I think now and then an individual
cetacean can snap,
as is the case for another dominant mammal I could mention. We've invaded
their space and changed it acoustically to their detriment, and in other
ways as well.

Two inter-species misunderstandings in these events, certainly.
