Does any one have any experience using Magellan GPS? I recently
purchased the 500XL Explorist and having problems trying to convert the
software into GPS format.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I have had two Magellan GPS units. One probably doesn't count because it was
the first "handheld" GPS produced back in the 1980s (for US$3,000 or so). I
think it will be a museum piece. The second one I bought three years ago for
work to locate microwave locations. The speedometer was great for using it
in one truck with a broken mechanical version and the map was ok for
land-based. I did not like it for paddling and bought a Garmin basic GPS
last year and have had no regrets. The user interface is somewhat more
complex than a Garmin, in my opinion.

A friend bought a newer Magellan with a color screen that was darn near
impossible to read.

I have an aviation Garmin that ties in with my glider's on-board computer
system (just a few years ago we managed fine with a variometer... now we all
have on-board computers) and it's always readable and easy to operate. Until
Magellan convinces me that they've clued-up I'm sticking with Garmin.
