On the Big Island, one of the main places to visit is the Captain Cook
monument in Kealakakua Bay. It is about a mile paddle from the dock to the
monument where there is excellent snorkeling. It is an interesting
adventure, if not a long paddle. The couple towns leading up to the road
down to the bay have about 1000 SOTs to rent out, it being one of the major
tourinst attractions in that area. On the way down Napaopoopoo Rd on the
left hand side by the coffee factory, look for a roadside Lei stand at a
plumeria farm. I look for it every time I'm there, as you can get a
beautiful Lei for $2. Other areas on the Big Isle are rather inaccessible.

You can read my attemp at a paddle on the Big Isle here. I hope to really
make it some day.

For more inspiration, check out Kelly Harrison's, story on circumnavigating
the island. He runs Plenty Pupule and does some rentals and tours.
