Actually, I think it's because there's no fresh water....bring lots!

Or bring a reverse-osmosis lever-operated watermaker. I had one of these
aboard our cruising sailboat, Kibitka. It was electric-operated with a
manual backup. I forget how many strokes it took to make a glass of water
but you won't need to take any books along to fill up your spare time.

But seriously, has anyone taken one of these along on a trip?

Only on trips to the Gulfo de California as a back up to our water bags. They run about $2000 US last i looked. Sounds like it might be a good idea to make sure you have you iPod loaded up with your favorite tunes or recorded books to listen to when doing the days pumping.

West Marine sells the Katadyn Survivor 06 manual reverse osmosis desalinator
for $800. Their catalog says it provides "enough water to keep a person
hydrated in one hour". Maybe you can rig a system to pedal power it while
you paddle. They do produce good water in my experience. It's the larger
12vdc models that cost $2k and up. I would certainly take one on any Sea of
Cortez trip.

Good evening Craig - For our group of eight we thought the larger was a better back up. Much discussion about adapting a solar panel to power the pump to make water while we paddled during the day. We never got the the implementation stage. We were able to carry enough water to make it through the trip.
I suspect there are folks out there in the PaddleWise universe that have rigged up something or have the background and skills to figure it out. Perhaps some one already has and will share with us on this site.
