I just came back from a kayak event in Parry Sound (about a 2 1/2 hour drive north of Toronto). I was surprised to see that the risk of forest fire was listed as "high." This seems a little bit nutty because this is essentially the wet season. Things typically get MORE dry as we get into July and August! Does anyone else have any unusual "dryness" reports? Florida can have winter days that are as warm as an Ontario summer! In Georgia, the daffodil bulbs are in full bloom in early March. In Toronto, they don't bloom until the end of April. While looking at kayaks from above, check out: 50 42' 45.41 N 2 01' 13.20 W on Google Earth. It is the SBS (part of UK Special Forces) compound and amongst all the military vessels are what appear to be two brightly coloured kayaks. Good to see that there is time to play amongst all the serious stuff! (Or, is it the other way around?) The UK Special Forces have a long and illustrious history of using kayaks for their missions. One of the most famous is during WWII when Blondie Hasler (who later invented the self-steering windvane for sailboats and was a primary mover in the single-handed races between the USA and England) led a team of commandos on a raid into France. The story was made into a feature film called "The Cockleshell Heroes". The boats were clearly kayaks although almost all references to them are of "cockleshells" or even "canoes" but they were 2-lace boats in which the paddlers used two-blade paddles. They looked remarkably like the Folboat I paddled in the early 1970s around Bowron Lakes. A cable-tv episode about Great Raids featured a 30-minute segment on this just a few weeks ago. All members of this particular raid died except for Hasler and his boat-partner. Several of the commandos were executed (illegally) on orders from Hitler when they were captured. (They should have been held as prisoners of war since they were in uniform.) If anyone has access to a DVD of this movie or knows where to buy one please get back to me. It's pretty dry when a swamp catches on fire, all right. I can think of only one thing that was worse. The Cuyahoga River that runs through Cleveland, OH caught fire. Twice. It's one thing for a swamp to catch fire but when a river catches fire, I call that "dry". This seems a little bit nutty because this is essentially the wet season. Things typically get MORE dry as we get into July and August! Speaking as a local forest fire warden here in Vermont I can tell you that spring is the time of the year when the relative humidity is at its lowest. This is due to the preponderance of polar continental (non-maritime) air with generally thinner cloud cover and little greenery to add humidity at the ground level. It's generally the light fuels, grass and twigs that are the issue in the springtime. If there is a lack of rainfall later in the year then the heavier fuels and soils will come into play. I've had the exerience of standing in ankle-deep water while extinguishing an advancing grass fire (maybe I should have been in a 'yak)! We had a drought in the Twin Cities this past winter, and there is currently a forest fire burning in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in the blowdown area. The last seven miles of the Gunflint Trail have been evacuated, and at least four cabins have already burned.
