There was a discussion a while back about the ethics of copying someone's
hull design. Is that still available on this server some how or would anyone
like to refresh the discussion? I was wondering how people feel about it in
regards to people building their own personal boat at home, not for
production or sale.

The most ethical approach would be to ask permission and be willing
to pay a royalty. If you like a design well enough to copy it, it is
appropriate to approach the designer.

There is a difference between carefully pulling the lines off a
specific boat and attempting to match those lines as exactly as
practical and taking a boat, getting some gross measurements and
using what you learned from studying the boat as a basis for your
own design. Using an existing boat as an inspiration for a new one
has a long and happy tradition. Just making a copy of someone else's
design is frowned upon.
