Will Jennings' excellent "good read" post reminded me of some of Ed Gillet's stories. (I took a weekend "beginners' clinic" with Ed about 12 years ago, and we discussed his Hawaiian expedition at some length. Interestingly, at that time, his reaction to a North Atlantic US/Europe transit was that it was too dangerous. Take that in context when you read his story at http://mwatton.customer.netspace.net.au/pacific.html. I wasn't a beginner in 1995, but I felt like it with Ed, and learned more in that weekend than in the rest of my almost 18 years in sea kayaks.) A 2003 C&K interview at http://www.canoekayak.com/features/stories/gillet/ is a little too glossy and cute, but there's some information there, too.
