I have noticed some 'pops' and soreness in my shoulders, especially the right one, and have started looking for exercises and info on the web. Anyone here have any experience and words of wisdom to impart on this very important subject? I got old! No detailed web reference here, but a strong suggestion you visit your local physical therapist or orthopedic specialist and get some professional advice. Mine prescribed (and trained me in the use of) a series of strengthening exercises employing lengths of "rubber dam" material similar to these: http://www.orthoassociates.com/shoulder1.htm#shldr_exrcs (The ones shown here are not the same ones I was given to use.) The rubber dam comes in varying thicknesses, which your specialist/therapist will choose to fit your fitness level. It is easy to overdo it. The "popping" you are experiencing suggests you may have some cartilage issues in there -- and surgery may be required. And, remember, this medical advice is worth what you paid for it! -- Dave Kruger Astoria, OR *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). I will see a doctor soon. Until then I am getting myself educated on back and shoulder exercises. Besides the one that Dave mentioned here, I also found these that seem to look good: http://www.paddling.net/guidelines/showArticle.html?241 http://www.paddling.net/guidelines/showCategory.html?category=26 http://newenglandkayakfishing.com/modules.php? name=News&file=article&sid=33 I have enough time at work to do these and can do them at home as well. My mother just had major shoulder surgery. It was bad enough that the doctor thought they might not be able to fix it. After rehab if it does not go well the only thing left to do is a replacement. So I AM taking this quite seriously. Oh, and I also just spent $900 on a drysuit so I have to be able to paddle! :) Paul Montgomery paul_at_paddleandoar.com http://paddleandoar.com *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). One more word on the subject (okay, maybe a few more words...) I've had physical therapy for both shoulders and a cortisone shot in the left. The right one, which was never as bad as the left, is pretty much 100%. The left still occasionally gives me a twinge, but I know what to do now. The same exercises that were previously outlined. Plus, the therapist used heat on my shoulder prior to exercise, to loosen it up, and then cold after the exercise, to calm everything down. Seemed to work - and I have to say that both the heat and the cold felt good. The cortisone shot was a miracle! It hurt like anything, but within 10 minutes of getting the shot I had full range of motion, whereas before the shot it was significantly compromised.Incidentally, I'm pretty sure that I did the damage with some ill-advised bracing practice. Must protect the shoulder at all times. Just keep saying that....Joan *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
