Some of you've been listening to this link:
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oxTy7KIAaA
I'd like to say I feel deeply for the poor sod.

It seems the record industry is just now doing its
darnest to eat Paul whole and still keep him!

A self-confessed shy man, only at ease while on
the stage, is now being carted around the world
visiting hundreds of tv studios, radio stations
and other types of publicity stunts.

He's just a commodity, that the bosses own,
and he'll do his seft-dom and like it! Look at
his blog, he feels has to write that he's sorry
he didn't write the day before (he used to write
every second day), and then there is nothing!

He went to New Zeeland August, and now nothing ?!

Hopefully, he'll survive mentally, being carted
around like a priced object, forced to wrote blogs,
and see the world in express speed, totally
changed to the promotors, day round!

However this story ends, it will make a good
film one day ...

Hope you Paul get out of it alive, and well,
all the best,

Tord

PS That's some voice, eh :-)?!

Perfectly nothing, as far as I'm aware, Dave!

On the other hand, I wouldn't know a bit about Paul Potts
without Paddlewise, so while it has nothing to do with kayaking
the singing Mark Sanders has given examples of
have nothing to do with paddling either, and Paul came up
as a remedy to Mark's efforts - neither mentioned by me ...

Naughty, naughty, whoever who published the link!

OK, no singing? No whales? Nor sirens, winds ... ???

It was a Paddlewise memeber, via the link supplied, that
taught me all about this car phone guy that became some
sort of star overnight. A good story, if not exactly outdoor,
nor aquatic. British, and overweight, but with a truely glorious voice!

I shouldn't have mused over the effects of selling your
soul to the devil - sorry! Shouldn't have mentioned that either, I
guess ...

Tord

PS I'll never mention singing nor potts ever again!

Same here. I know it's not about paddling, but a compelling story
from a link supplied here. On one of the YouTube comments someone
said, "Dear God, please take care of this man." It's funny, but a lot
of people feel exactly the same way. He must get tired of every
single interviewer asking him "How does it feel?" and to be always
called "an ordinary guy". There is NOTHING ordinary about Paul Potts.

This actually does have a kayaking link. It started with Mark not
being able to get the "song" Chocolate Rain out of his head, so several
of us suggested he sing opera instead while he is paddling, with Paul
Potts there for Mark to emulate. The link is that Mark is a kayaker and
a music buff.

G'day,

That song/chant the marines sing bits of in old movies sounds spot on for a group pushing against a current or wind.

Is there a complete list somewhere of all the words or did the marines make it up as they went along?

Did/do the marines really sing this chant or is it just for old movies?

All the best, PeterO

Peter O, I think one of the best seafaring tunes for paddlers is Stan
Rogers' Barrett's Privateers:

Stan Rogers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Rogers
Barrett's Privateers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrett%27s_Privateers
Lyrics: http://www.tsrocks.com/s/stan_rogers_texts/barretts_privateers.html

This is a gutsy, bloody, irreverent tune, the true sort for seafaring folks
of either gender.

I offer it humbly, in a gentle effort to remain on-topic, and always
relevant. When we flipped the hull of the boat I am building, I made all
the heavy lifters sing the tune, accompanied by Stan on the boom box,
lyrics in hand. I thought it went well, but the boys were not entirely
happy (see here: http://tinyurl.com/2dpscp ; dial back to observe the
flipping). In fact, a couple weeks later, one of the helpers, my uphill
neighbor, asked another (my downhill neighbor) to assist him in remounting
the canopy on the bed of his pickup. DHN's response: "Uh, well, okay,
just so long as we don't have to sing!"

Neither of these gentlemen has every owned a wing paddle, run a rapid, or
stunk mightily after a week in neoprene, but they did join forces for a
hearty round of Stan Rogers. A glass of Irish ale would be good right no,
hey, mateys?

My cousin Pam, the Broadway singer, wrote a little ditty called "Sea
Chantey for Women's Voices." It's sung to the tune of the theme from
"The Wizard of Oz." Lyrics below

We're off to sea.

That's a good one, John. It is new to me. Thanks for the assist when I
use my wing paddle. I like BP for its lusty thrust, but the Jeannie C
really touches some of the soulful aspects of paddling.

Another Stan Rogers tune that fits the loss associated with seafaring is
his "The Lockkeeper," which I have never heard sung by Rogers. However,
John Gorka has a very soulful version out now (scroll down for a shot):
http://www.redhouserecords.com/194.html It is the tune to die for in
Gorka's newest release, at least for me.
