You don't need to be on the ocean to experience cold water immersion. The local trout stream here is deep and cold enough to experiment, and with a mask, snorkle and fins, one can view the fish while testing your body's reaction to low water temperature. Done on a sunny day in July or August while wearing a bathing suit, it's an interesting adventure. Curiously, you may not feel the cold water shock until you back come out. My experience has always been prolonged uncontrolled shivering for quite a while after exiting the river, but not while emersed. Ocean temperatures I think would be colder than the river, so would expect an ocean dunking to be even more stressful. I also would not try the river swim in winter without some thermal protection.
