Wolfgang Brink took a photo of me playing at TAKS in what I figure must have been my biggest wave of the day. Maybe you folk who are good at guessing wave height can tell me how big it is. Then I'll add 2 feet to impress my friends! http://www.sandmarks.net/graphics/ThisEndUp.jpg Mark www.SandMarks.net *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Knowing that the average length for a sea kayak is 51.3 feet that wave was no less than 36 feet tall. Digressing a bit I am having trouble with the fact that when scaled you are 18 feet tall in that photo. The worst part of navigating this 40-foot breaker were the Orcas waiting for seals and itinerant kayakers. It's only surprising that Mark survived at all. Mark, Well done! This picture shows you paddling right up the face of the wave. Often kayakers quit paddling just before the wave hits them, which costs them much of the forward momentum needed to make it over or through the wave. I keep paddling even after I'm airborne while coming down on the other side of the wave. This doesn't soften my landings, but I think the gyroscopic action helps to keep me upright ;-) Patrick ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark Sanders" <sandmarks_at_ca.rr.com> To: "CKF" <ckf_at_paddlewise.net> Cc: "PaddleWise" <paddlewise_at_paddlewise.net> Sent: Sunday, November 04, 2007 11:47 AM Subject: CKF: Me in a Wave > Wolfgang Brink took a photo of me playing at TAKS in what I figure must > have > been my biggest wave of the day. Mark, You've heard the "Old Farts" in the club talking about "Dumpy", that rogue wave who somehow manages to get you. Well that picture was you beating "Dumpy". All I can say is watch out the next time you're on the water - you probably ticked him off. If you're real quiet, you may even hear that very soft "Tee Hee, Tee Hee", that Dumpy sometimes makes when he gets you.
