Noticed mention of a "SSB shortwave (Kaito 1103) receiver", found it
available at http://store.advancedmart.com/kakadiamfmsw.html
Question: What is the smallest, lightest SSB shortwave receiver
available? I use a Sangean ATS 505P, think of it as an essential tool
for marine forecasts in Australia, but would like the same reception and
tuning in something the size of a matchbox.

Peter... I think you're not likely to find an all-band SW receiver with 1khz
digital tuning in the size of a matchbox but you might want to look at some
of the QRP (very low power) amateur receivers. When they're small they tend
to be designed for only one band (14 and 7 mhz are common).

This amateur QRP transceiver (
http://www.fix.net/~jparker/wilderness/sierra.htm) is pretty small and has
the advantage of both transmitting and receiving (in case of emergency only)
and you can build your own band module for whatever frequency range(s) you
need. Cost is about US$400 for a kit with six ham-band modules.

There are others but I think the Kaito and the Sangean are still smaller
receivers.

Can't vouch for this radio's performance, but I have had good luck in
other purchases through this site.

I have no financial interest in this site or its products.

It certainly is small! No mention that I found of SSB tuning (which is a
must for tuning weather forecasts on the HF bands). Cute tho. :)
