I was in St. Johns a few years ago.  I didn't see any palm trees, nor 
attempt to seek out rum.  However, I *did* discover that there is plenty 
of ale to be found on George Street.  I was with a group of software 
developers for a two day meeting.  About half of the group and I did a 
nice kayak tour out of Tors Cove out to an island with some large sea 
caves.  It was at the end of the Puffin mating season so we saw millions 
of puffins.
