It's been snowing and blowing in the Pacific NW, with some
flooding thrown in for good measure, and meth addicts trying
to strip copper wire from power substations and street lights.

Does anybody have a nice warm-water paddling story to tell
that would warm us weather-bound types?

I paddled off the coast of Georgia, USA a few weekends back. It was a
bit windy. OK, it was a freakin' gale but we stupidly pushed out
anyway. We made 6 miles in five hours of deadly serious effort. I was
pretty warm by the end. As sometimes happens when you don't get what
you want you get experience instead.

Not so much a paddling story, but if you want *warm*, you could try
finding some live wires and start stripping the insulation off. It'll
warm ya right up, for a second or two...

OK, paddling... I'm in the middle of a significant effort to produce
topo maps for most of the coast of Newfoundland, in the format one
can load onto a Garmin GPS. There's a group of four of us who'll be
heading out that way in June, looking for whales, icebergs (and wild
women!)

Newfoundland! So that's where the warm wind blows. All this time I
thought it was Baja or Costa Rica.

It is a little known fact (I think the URL is www.littleknownfacts.com) that
Newfoundland once contained significant forests of palm trees.
Unfortunately, the early Newfies burned them all producing rum. Or drinking
rum. I forget which.

Newfoundland remains a source of great humor, fun people, and super
paddling. I'm pretty sure. (It's been a while since I've been there.) But
the palm trees, alas, are long gone. And probably the rum, too.

I was in St. Johns a few years ago. I didn't see any palm trees, nor
attempt to seek out rum. However, I *did* discover that there is plenty
of ale to be found on George Street. I was with a group of software
developers for a two day meeting. About half of the group and I did a
nice kayak tour out of Tors Cove out to an island with some large sea
caves. It was at the end of the Puffin mating season so we saw millions
of puffins.
