This is only connected with kayaking via a tenuous thread. We plan on putting up a yurt on our new beach lot on Whidbey Island so we will have a place to stay and kayak over on the west side of the mountains. Rather than immediately install a septic system (which I don't much like anyway) we decided to put up an "out-tent" with either a porta-potti or a composting toilet. As luck would have it, I found a composting toilet for sale on (what else?) craigslist. It is a brand new display model (unused) but not in a box. After I had dropped off my Coaster in Bellingham for repairs I drove to Buckley, WA to get the toilet. (Don't ask me where it is... I have a dash-mounted GPS to take care of those details.) Since only my Kia Optima sedan has kayak racks I had to drive that car over the mtns. Now a composting toilet turns out to be somewhat compact but it still looks exactly like a toilet. The problem was where was I going to carry it in a sedan? I forgot to mention that I had picked up a used Raytheon 1200 radar system and scanner for the muthah-ship on... well, you can guess that part. So no room in the trunk. We ended up strapping the toilet into the passenger seat and I drove it 150 miles home on the freeway. I only wish I could have seen some of the looks the trucks glancing down into my passenger window must have given. I know that the neighbors here have been curious, to say the least. Just a taste of what you get when you dive into the kayaking lifestyle completely and utterly.
