The weather was a perfect 10 for paddling a few Saturdays back, here
in southeast Texas and thankfully I was able to maximize the exposure.
Dusted off the olde sea kayak and off I went with three other
like-minded souls on Armand Bayou. One of our number is brand new to
the area and requested gator-sightings, and boy, did we ever deliver!
These are more alligator photos than I've ever been able to take, and on
top of that we had cooperative roseate spoonbills (birds) and even the
black vultures. Temps were in the 70s; blue skies and sunshine, it
hardly gets better. The photographic evidence is at:
http://good-times.webshots.com/album/562657522EEbuIz

Photos were taken with an inexpensive ($150) HP camera with 6x optical
zoom. Yes, we were close to the gators, but the zoom somewhat
exaggerates that, so please don't think our next step would be to pat
these big boys on the head.

A cold front blew in the next day, dropping temps 30 degrees, yea, even
40 degrees over the warmth of Saturday, but I know the warmth will
return.

It seems a truism, where there are gators, there are hungry gators. I wonder
how my love for kayaking would coexist with dinosaurs roaming the water.
Nice pics!

Keep in mind that those Gators won back-to-back NCAA basketball
championships in 2006 and 2007, and a football championship in 2007.
They may act lethargic, but man they can run, jump, and shoot.

Brad, I thirst no more for your humour. Your wit, alas, not dry enough.
Perhaps you drink too much Gator-ade. I dunno. And while we're at it, your
sarcasm, satire, and generally pathetic attempts at jeu d'esprit are all too
galling. Please keep it up!! :-)

Hey Brad,

Perhaps Doug would be a suitable candidate for testing the composting kayak.
Doesn't Victoria have a waste disposal problem? I envision an entire fleet
of composting kayaks happily paddling along and reducing any effluent waste
issue to a non-problem.

Besides, he's more-or-less between rides now anyway. And closer than Mark.

   Doug:
I don't know why you are referring to sarcasm, satire, and jeu
d'esprit, whatever that is (bottled water?). We are trying to have some
serious kayak discussions here, but you keep digressing from the main
topic. Steady as she goes, matey.

Brad... I (for one) welcome your attempts to keep this forum on an even
keel. Far too many serious threads have deteriorated lately. Paddlers should
think first and compost later.

What can I say here. I love kayaking and I love humor. There are some
incredibly talented and knowledgable kayakers on this list, and also
some (intentionally) very humorous people. So it's delightful to be
informed and entertained at the same time. Plus the price is just right.
Too bad Jerry Seinfeld, Josh Blue, and David Letterman haven't discovered
kayaking yet. But there may still be time.

Craig/Brad

Sorry Craig, you especially should know only Matt n' his Mariners can keep
an even keel in any type of serious seaway. Speaking of those Mariners, have
they ever played against the Gators? I don't follow American sports much so
don't know, even though Brad thinks I know something about those Gators.

As for composting, guess my decomposing composition lately seems to have
given you some recomposition paronomasia possibilities (no Brad, that's not
some malevolent French elixir). Absinthe is. An ancient French drink
reported to bring folks to the edge of reason - before it was banned in
France. Must be the decomposing ingredient wormwood. I drink it all the
time. See, it's not a decompensation of mental stability due to anything
psychiatrically intrinsic. But what's your excuse? :-)

I do hope you both realize the only real decomposition happening in the
field of sea kayaking is Harvey's fleet of SOFs, though Harvey has done an
amazing job of documenting many somewhat decomposed kayak specimens. At
least his work will last long after my kid's kids' great grandchildren are
tootling around above the skin of the ocean in anti-gravity school buses
exploring new shorelines at the foot of the Rockies for field trips.

So, happy Eater to all you decomposing old f_at_rt$, of which I am one now.
Remember, old paddlers never die, they just smell that way. Heck, even young
paddlers smell that way if they don't paddle in Icebreaker base layers.

Doug Lloyd (who just bought a bunch of Icebreaker marino wool layers at a
local gear grab sale - you gotta get some man!!)

Np affilliation to Icebreaker, the Mariners, the Gators or Gatorade, or
Absinthe
