G'Day, Thanks to everyone who replied to my request for ideas on rescuing unconscious paddlers. I mentioned four of us were going to have a "trick rolling session" and that it was likely to be a good opportunity to try out the bow roll rescue. It turned out some of the group had also seen the links that Jim mentioned as well as an article in Sea Kayaker and they were keen to try it. Sure enough as we carried out various manoevres and there were occasional, OK frequent, failures! In fact a great deal of opportunity for rescues and self rescues. A strong and very capable instructor in our small group was keen to try and used the bow roll rescue successfully a number of times, but completely failed in a couple of attempts to rescue me in a Pittarak while I feigned unconsciousness (or at least did nothing to help). The bow of the Pittarak is very narrow and knifelike, its also curved and sweeps up so it provided very little purchase to allow the bow roll rescue to work. Thought this was worth mentioning as it seems the bow roll rescue can be very effective but maybe not for all boats. All the best, PeterO *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
