Kayakers,

I had organized a Catalina crossing (20 mile) and camping trip this weekend, but with a poor weather forecast Friday night, I canceled it. Of course, I woke up this morning, checked the conditions, and everything is fine. Talk about being bummed! Oh, well! Better to be safe than end up in a safety article in Sea Kayaker magazine. Don't want Doug Lloyd flying down to investigate.

Anyway, with new found spare time for the weekend, I went to the lumber yard to hunt for a piece of redwood for a paddle project months down the line. I couldn't find a piece even close to good enough for a paddle, but I did find a nice piece of Douglas fir that was 13'x1"x12", perfect for a skinboat I've been thinking about building a while. I didn't have any plans to build a kayak anytime soon, but I've gotten the hang of my new job, have lots of mental energy left over, and thought what the heck. So on the truck the board went.

Out of that piece of wood I was able to cut out the gunwales, chines, keel and deck beams, without following any directions, but rather just cutting them to a size that looks right. I'm building a short Greenland style 14-footer for goofing around in. It's been 10 years since I've built a skinboat and I'm looking forward to the process again, which is quite soulful. The beauty of it is designing it as you build it.
