September and often October can be very calm - barring any big systems. When Sean left, the system was well predicted. A few of us were scratching our heads. He'll get his northwesterlies maybe tomorrow - 40 knots or more. Most in-season paddlers rely on the big westerlies for a west coast push south, but those diminish in September too, so not sure what the thinking was. With a lot of kayak retailers, whosesalers, and guides, they often don't have a choice of the better weather windows. At least he's strong, not stupid, and has arguably one of the best kayaks for rough water in the world - if not for speed. I hadn't factored in the kayak business angle, those folks are pretty busy in September. I don't question his skills or judgement in the slightest, he has the stoke to get what he wants out of it. Although I've paddled quite a bit into Autumn on the coast, it usually involves alot of soul searching with the forecast.
