In an email from Mike Euritt earlier today, Al Gore was quoted as saying, ".......that in five years the ice will be gone." I am reminded of a similarly dramatic statement written by Harold Camping, a bible scholar, who predicted that the Second Coming of Christ, and the end of the world, would take place in 1994 and authored a book titled "1994?" I have no doubt that Mr. Camping was most sincere in his belief and though he probably made some money from the book's sale I also doubt that he wrote it primarily for a profit. And last time I looked (excuse me while I glance out the window.......ah, yes ! ) the world was still here. That's good because I hope to start the year 2009 right by going paddling on New Years Day. Though I am 82, I also hope to still be around five years from now to see if there's any ice left, or whether Mr. Gore, like Harold Camping, was off a little in his predictions. It does occur to me, however, that if Gore is right, I may be able to launch my kayak from my own beach front property here in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. And Mark Sanders, et.al. may have to scramble for property in the Sierra Madre. :} Dave, the Ol' Kayaker *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
