I can't help but note that any competent San Francisco Bay Area
paddler would have looked at the tide charts for this weekend and
decided that this was exactly the wrong weekend to paddle out the gate
and around Point Bonita. Tide flowing into the Bay until 12:45 pm,
huge full moon ebb (max 6 knots) flowing out of the Bay in the
afternoon. Why would you ever head out the Gate in the morning and
return in the afternoon this past weekend?

In contrast to Mark's experience on Saturday, members of Bay Area Sea
Kayakers gathered at Horseshoe Cove by the Golden Gate Bridge at dawn
on Sunday and rode the tides up and into the Bay, returning in the
late afternoon, for a total of 36 nautical miles, touching 13 SF Bay
islands. This annual trip, known as the Gonzo, was initiated by Mike
Higgins, who has paddled every mile of the Left Coast from Canada to
Mexico. I can't say for sure, but knowing Mike, he has no stars.
