Craig,

Daffodils are up, the air temp was 55 F the other day, and I've been
wearing shorts around town for a week.

You're just in the wrong temperate zone.

If it is any small consolation to anyone, here in central VT it was
exactly 0 degrees F this AM, and headed to -10 tonight in my cold little
vale.

Water, water everywhere and not a drop to paddle......

It was 59 F here the other day too. Last night a wind chill of -15 F was
predicted.

Somewhat related: I was in Providence, RI last Friday, the day that
kayaker went missing near Boston. It was in the high 50's that day, the
kind of early spring day that has so many times before prompted someone
to go out for a paddle, even though the water temps are still in the low
40s or colder.

In lake Ontario, the water temps wont be "up" until the end of May. If this is your paddling criteria, it makes for an awefully short paddling season.

I'm taking a two day short boat surf class on Tybee St Patrick's day
weekend. It could be balmy or it could be bitter. So goes March.

And in Puget Sound they won't be "up" until global warming is a lot more
advanced than it is now. I just bought my wife her first drysuit (from
craigslist). But I would like daytime air temps to be closer to 60 than to
40.

And I just arranged for a slip for the "muthah-ship" at Oak Harbor Marina;
only 20 miles from Deception Pass where there is a marine state park called
"Cornet Bay" complete with docks and moorings. Twenty more miles and I'm in
the middle of the San Juan Islands.

And, as of this month, I'm officially on Social Security. :D

It sounds wonderful but it would jeopardize the trip Pam and I have planned
in the first week of May. We're going to do the week-long SOF kayak building
class that Brian of Cape Falcon Kayaks offers. I know I'm going to build
Brian's F1 which is an SOF kayak in the spirit of the Mariner Coaster and
looks to have fantastic surfing and maneuverability characteristics. Pam is
leaning that way too. It is two months away, and will pre-empt any trips to
so. cali. but I'm really looking forward to it. Just wish that there was a
one-week yurt at Manzanita State Park for us to rent (they're all booked).

For the curious among you, here (
http://www.capefalconkayak.com/f1surf.html ) is Brian's web page with photos
of the F1 in the surf and on the beach. It's 6 inches longer than the
Coaster and can be customized to fit me a little better (I need a slighly
larger cockpit, for instance).

But a 5-day trip to the islands sounds terrific right now. I'm going to be
hard-pressed to be ready to take a week off by May 3rd what with the
mother-ship and the shop restoration.

PS: On the bright side, the lake has thawed completely now. Shortest period
(by a full month) that I can remember.

Craig,

I'd love to do that class sometime. I'll be interested to see how you think
the SOF compares with your 'real' Coaster!
If I wasn't so lazy and could get some of the work I need to do done around
the house, I could contemplate building a boat and a SOF would probably be
my project of choice.
