Had a brisk little paddle in the rain and wind today for a couple of hours. Afterward I went looking for a kayak shop that I had seen on the internet. On the way I thought I heard my strap making noise so I pulled off into a small parking lot at a mountain trail head. All was OK so I pulled back out - right into a ditch. Seriously thought that I was going to roll, but all that happened was my front license plate and holder came off. The whole truck was resting on the bumper. The ditch is impossible to see. A parks employee came by and said someone else did the same thing 2 weeks ago. She pulled out an iPhone and asked it I wanted a picture. "Might as well get SOMETHING out of this". I called 911 for a tow truck and they sent the State Patrol. They in turn called the tow truck. $200 later I was free to go. And the kayak shop I was looking for? Just someone's house who has a website. I just turned around and went home. Very very safely. If you get an email of this picture in a couple of years with some bogus story, you'll know how it REALLY was. You could have gone to the local McDonalds and gotten a few chunky patrons to sit on the left rear bumper and paid them with $100 worth of fries. It would have cost you half. Jim the idea man. Just not good ideas. Wife says, "You know your daughter... we're going to baby sit while she goes to town so maybe you should park over a lane." I just backed up 2 car lengths (long driveway) to give her time to see and avoid. The daughter - who apparently relies on a fancy rear radar system that apparently doesn't work - managed to whack our bumper. Her bumper was unhurt. $800 later....... Next time over I parked down the block. And then complained loudy about the long walk. :) Craig Jungers Moses Lake, WA www.nwkayaking.net *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
