This Sunday our club, CKF, will be holding their annual picnic on the calm
waters of Alamitos Bay. Seems long ago, but it was just last year that Craig
made the crazy all night drive to come down to attend. This year Duane
Strosaker is in charge of the festivities. After a couple year absence,
we're having a speed rolling contest again.

Now at the beginning of this year, I was just happy I was pretty confident
of pulling out one roll in the ol' Lollygagger. But a few weeks ago, out
rolling my Sapsucker with my friend Ken, we decided to work on our speed
rolling and enter the contest. We don't harbor hopes of winning, just
competing seemed a lofty enough goal.

Well our practice sessions since then have been few and far between, but
yesterday we went out on a warm afternoon for some practice. Both Ken and I
were able to do 9 rolls only seconds past the 30 second deadline. I had
tried to stop at 8, but was so dizzy I fell over and had to do my ninth and
Ken said I almost made it! We were both pretty happy and wondered if in the
heat of battle we'll be able to keep up this pace.

Anyway, it got me thinking that speed rolling isn't a good thing to practice
on your own! I'd spent the weekend out in Denver visiting my newest grandson
and hadn't gotten a lot of sleep, so I already had a headache when we hit
the water. Perhaps it was a bit of jet-lag, but I was a bit loopy after my
nine rolls and glad someone was around just in case. I may go out solo
today, but I'll take it slow and just work on form a bit. Sadly, my offside
roll was totally missing yesterday.

Anybody else out there have any speed rolling stories???

Mark

You asked for speed rolling stories.

The Western Michigan Coastal Kayak Association symposium always has a
speed rolling contest, open to instructors and students. A few years
ago, a very great paddler, who is an Instructor Trainer Educator for the
ACA and one of the best teachers/paddlers around, had a problem in the
middle of his timed rolling session where he took in a bit of water as
he gulped a breath of air. This lead to an instant asthma reaction (he
does have asthma) and resulting loss of orientation. He was upside down
for a while before he got himself out. He was wheezing and hacking
water out of his lungs for the rest of the evening.

No one even thought to help because it was unthinkable that this guy
might need a rescue.

So your caution, Mark, is right on. Stuff happens.

That was one of the best weekends ever! Pam and I were going to try to
attend this year's picnic (just horn in, ya know) but we ended up building
SOF kayaks in Oregon in the rain instead. I wish I could remember whose idea
*that* was. Let's see... warm weather and water and fun people plus
paddling.... or work my tush off and go home each night to a 13-foot trailer
that's being buffeted by storms. Well, at least I got a Coaster-ish kayak
out of it.

So I guess I'll pass on this year's picnic. Maybe next year. Besides, it's
Mark's turn to come up here and paddle the F-1 and go for a ride on the
muthah-ship.

And congrats on the new grand-baby. :)

Well THEY say time is money, but as usual THEY lie, because while I seem to
have a lot of time on my hands, I lack the funds to do a lot of things Id
like to do! Your week long SOF build sounded like a lot of work, but you
have a nice product to show for it. I wouldnt mind having to find space in
my garage to hang an F-1!

I think they should have said "time OR money". Whenever I have a lot of
spare time I don't have any spare money. LOL

yep, have someone spotting. Friends of mine were practicing this in a pool
and someone else at the pool decided to give it a try. They drifted
across the pool as you might expect while rolling and took a hard one to the
head on the steps. So good, fun practice, but have a spotter.

My favorite speed rolling involves a dozen quick rolls but on open water
full speed forward with two stokes between each to regain forward speed and
setup for the next on-side roll. If you can do this confidently and
consistently, you can take on anything (even enjoy a Nordkapp).

I did this once on a hot summer day as I pulled down an inlet after a long
day. I don't like rolling in open water on really hot days as my glasses
steam up. Talk bout disorientation (hot then suddenly cold). Thought I was
going to die...

Another variation involves a pool or lake with as many rolls as you can -
whilst at about roll five to seven someone in the water grabs your stern and
tries to prevent you from completing your rolls. This gives a realistic
feeling of what it is like to do a combat roll in difficult circumstances
with a bit of exhaustions and imperfectly timed breathing going down. This
is a good one for surf yakers.

You ain't chilling if you ain't spilling.

Paddlewisers,

A friend and I used to sneak up from behind and tip each other over. Then one time I took it a step farther by holding his kayak upside down so he couldn't roll back up. Since then things haven't been the same between us.

About five years ago I was in Elk Lake with some club members and decided to
see how many consecutive rolls I could do. I was paddling a Pygmy Arctic
Tern and after coming up for the 13th time felt, like I was drinking Mescal
back in Juarez Mexico. On that occasion I woke up in the desert with my
feet on the floor of a Ford Falcon, the door was wide open and my upper
body was hanging out, my face was in the dust and dirt. There was no one in
the drivers seat. The keys where in the ignition so I drove back to where I
thought Juarez should be, eventually found my own car and left Mexico never
to return for 30 years.

Sorry I digressed there a little, but there was a point, fearing I might be
on the verge of a similar experience, I retired from the lake and went
directly to a pub where I confirmed my fears.
