G'Day Tord, Paddlewise and Dave Kruger,

I think this is an area where Dave Kruger may be able to help.

Re lithium ion battery hazards. The thought of sitting over such combustible
batteries on a bike is frightening enough let alone being at sea with one. The
batteries I'm referring to are LiFeP (lithium iron phosphate) rather than LIPo
(lithium ion polymer). Lithium iron phosphate batteries are generally
considered free from fire and explosion hazards both in theory and in
practice. Explosions and fires have been reported for lithium cobalt oxide
batteries in computers and bicycles and have been postulated for lithium
manganese oxide batteries. I'm not aware of an history of fire sor hazards for
a LiFeP battery. But you raised the possibility of water, salt water) ingress
and I've no idea what the result would be.

Some time ago Dave Kruger gave a rundown of the hazards associated with
lithium batteries. All power batteries exposed to water would pose some hazard
due to short circuit but Dave do you have any knowedge of the potential for
fire or explosion if saltwater were to find its way into a lithium iron
phosphate battery?

All the best, PeterO
