Quite unknown to most in the kayak world, the Billabong Classic Kayak Rolling Contest was held in the waters just off Corona del Mar this morning. This being it's first year, there weren't a lot of participants, but in hopes of drawing interest for future events, Billabong flew in their sea plane to drum up publicity and oversee the competition. A few assorted boats under the watchful eye of the Harbor Patrol boat, gathered around the sea plane to watch the competition Despite the low turnout, it was an exciting contest with two kayak styles vying in the final: Greenland rolling vs. Euro style! The CKF community will be excited to learn that Ken Fry, using his Euro blade, tied Mark Sanders with his G-Stick with four rolls each to be named co-champions! In the spirit of comradery, Sanders forsook his fifth roll so Ken wouldn't cry! It was difficult to tell whom Barb was most rooting for!!! Television choppers circled overhead, so snippets of the event might make their way into local newscasts if we're lucky.
